The Ukrainian Book Institute (hereinafter referred to as the Institute) announces the start of the Translations Support Programme of Ukrainian literature into foreign languages Translate Ukraine 2021 (hereinafter referred to as the Programme) and invites publishers willing to translate, publish and distribute foreign language publications of Ukrainian literature in foreign countries to submit applications for the Programme.
The Open-Call of the Programme starts on April 19, 2021.
Implementation stages of the Program:
The selection of projects for translations will be carried out by the Institute's Expert Council. The final list of projects will be defined by the Institute and published on the website. The publisher whose application was approved, gets partial or full reimbursement for copyright license, translation costs and the acquisition of rights to its publication. Expenses are reimbursed according to the submitted estimate.
The amount of the reimbursement for each project in the final list is up to 4000 EUR.
The Programme covers the main genres of modern and classical Ukrainian literature.

The priorities of the Program in 2021 are translation of works by Lesya Ukrainka, Lina Kostenko, Hryhoriy Skovoroda, and works on the history of Ukraine.
Please, pay your attention to the fact that the programme does not provide subsidies for works previously translated and published in the relevant foreign language and projects on translations of publications such as production - practical works, regulatory, reference, advertising editions and leisure publications.
Funds for the winners will be reimbursed after the publication of the book and after the Institute receives reporting documents on the fulfillment of obligations.
Notice that reporting documents and published books are accepted until November 15, 2021.

What projects does the Institute support?
The Institute supports the projects of translations of literary works or anthologies of literary works written in Ukrainian and published by Ukrainian publishers.
What are the projects the Institute does not support?
Projects such as production and practical works, regulatory, reference, advertising, hobbies and interests books, DIY books;
How many applications can one publisher submit?
The number of applications for participation in the Translation Support Program from one publisher is unlimited.
Who can apply for the Translation Support Programme?
The applicant can be a legal entity, a foreign and / or Ukrainian publisher. The publisher must submit an application with the full package of documents specified in the Announcement to participate in the Program.
Can Ukrainian publisher apply for the Programme?
In accordance with the Regulation, Ukrainian publishers can participate in the Translation Support Program for translations of Ukrainian literary works into other languages.
Can a publishing house apply with a book that has been translated and published already?
No. Applications for translation of works of Ukrainian literature that have already been translated and published on the applicant's book market in the relevant foreign language are not accepted for participation in the Program.
Which projects can be applied for the Program?
Projects of translations of those literary works that have been published in Ukraine in Ukrainian language before the start date of the Open-Call of the Programme (19.04.21).
How much does the Institute reimburse to the project?
In the frame of the Programme the maximum amount of the reimbursement for one project is EUR 4,000.

When the translation must be published?
The translation of the book into a foreign language must be published (and the reporting copies are sent to the Institute) by November 15, 2021.
Can an e-book be released instead of a printrun as a result of the project?
No, it can not. The publisher must release the printrun specified in the agreement and provide the Institute with physical copies of the book to receive the reimbursement for the translated project. However, the publisher may also release an electronic or audio version of the book with appropriate agreements with copyright holders.
When will I receive the reimbursement?
The reimbursement of the costs will be made after the signing of the act of the project implementation by the applicant (publisher) and the Institute, and after publishing the book and sending the reporting documents together with three printed copies of the translation to the Institute. The Institute will reimburse the costs until the end of 2021 according to the signed contract with the publisher.
What does the application include?
What format should I send a copy of the contract?
The applicant must send a scanned PDF file of the contract signed by both parties in the original language. The documents should be accompanied by a brief explanation in English that must include: the title of the work, the name and surname of the author, the name and surname of the translator, the name of the Ukrainian publisher, the terms of the contract. Indicate what type of document it is in the title of the document in English.
Do I need to have the signed contracts for translation and contracts with rights holders at the time of application for the Programme?
Yes, these contracts are an integral part of the application.
Who can translate the book for this Programme?
The translator of the literary work must be sufficiently qualified as the competence of the translator is one of the criteria for evaluating the project by the Expert Council of the Institute. It is desirable that the translator has previous translations from the Ukrainian language and / or has a degree proving proficiency in the Ukrainian language.
