Vilnius Book Fair (Vilniaus Knygų mugė)

That year’s motto of the fair was a quote by Lithuanian writer Henrikas Radauskas: “I do not believe in the world, but I believe in fairy tales.” The Ukrainian national stand was organised by the Ukrainian Book Institute under the motto “Fragility of Existence.” The participating publishers were Zaliznyi Tato, Old Lion Publishing House, Baltiya-Druk, Vivat, ASSA, ADEF, Parasolia, Summit-Book, and Tianachu. Ranok and Zaliznyi Tato also had their own individual stands. Throughout all four days of the fair, the installation Small Fairy Tales was presented — an audio-sensory adaptation of fairy tales and illustrations by Ukrainian writer Kateryna Mikhalitsyna. Anastasiia Leonova, Maksym Yeristavi, Kateryna Mikhalitsyna, Yuliia Musakovska, and Iryna Shuvalova took part in public discussions.

The London Book Fair

From 12 to 14 March 2024, the London Book Fair, one of the most important business events in the English-language book industry, took place in the capital of the United Kingdom. The fair attracted more than 30,000 visitors. Ukraine organised two major discussions in London: Power of People, featuring Olesia Khromeychuk, Olha Mukha, David Patrikarakos, Iryna Starovoyt, and Emma Graham-Harrison; and Despite the War: Challenges and Dynamics in Representing Ukrainian Literature Globally — a professional discussion on the specifics of translation, featuring William Blacker, Nina Kuryata, Tetiana Horiushyna, and Anhelina Trofymchuk. Leipziger Buchmesse
March 21-24
Leipzig, Germany
The Leipzig Book Fair took place from 21 to 24 March 2024. Ukraine participated with a national stand organised by the Ukrainian Book Institute. Eleven publishers presented more than 150 new titles. The programme featured 28 events with renowned Ukrainian and international writers, literary scholars, journalists, and opinion leaders. Among them was a presentation of the poetry collection Poems from the Loophole (Virshi z biinytsi) by poet and soldier Maksym Kryvtsov, with the participation of Dmytro Verbych, Anastasiia Nikitina, Anastasiia Khudaverdian, and Kateryna Mikhalitsyna.

Foire du livre de Bruxelles

Brussels, Belgium
In 2024 the Brussels Book Fair attracted approximately 75,000 visitors. Ukraine participated in the Brussels Book Fair with a national stand for the first time. The motto of Ukraine’s participation was Fragility of Existence. Six publishers presented their books at the Ukrainian national stand. The main literary programme of the Brussels Book Fair featured events with writer Andriy Kurkov and poet Lyuba Yakimchuk.

Bologna Children's Book Fair

Bologna, Italy
37,735 visitors attended the book event in Italy. Ukraine was represented by 20 publishers at the national stand organised by the Ukrainian Book Institute. The design of the Ukrainian national stand at the Bologna Children's Book Fair was based on illustrations by Oleksandr Shatohin from the wordless picture book The Yellow Butterfly, published by Old Lion Publishing House.

Międzynarodowe Targi Książki w Warszawie

Warsaw, Poland
The Warsaw International Book Fair attracted approximately 120,000 visitors. Ukraine participated with a national stand featuring more than 300 new titles from 20 Ukrainian publishers. The Ukrainian Book Institute coordinated the literary programme, which featured Svitlana Taratorina, Yaryna Tsymbal, Yurii Vynnychuk, and Halyna Tkachuk. Liber Book Fair

Barcelona, Spain
From 1 to 3 October, Barcelona hosted Liber, one of the largest book fairs in the world. More than 250 publishers from 13 countries took part. According to the organisers, the event attracted more than 6,500 visitors. This year, Ukraine was represented for the first time at the leading Spanish-language publishing platform in Europe. Irena Karpa and Tetiana Teren took part in public events at the fair.

Frankfurter Buchmesse

Frankfurt am Main, Germany
In 2024 the Frankfurt Book Fair attracted more than 230,000 visitors. Ukraine’s focus theme was Reclaiming the Voice. The Ukrainian programme featured 27 events with authors, intellectuals, and public figures, including Sofia Andrukhovych, Nariman Dzhelyal, Olena Stiazhkina, Dmytro Kuleba, Pavlo Makov, Tania Maliarchuk, Myroslav Laiuk, Iya Kiva, Radoslav Mokryk, Kateryna Mikhalitsyna, Alim Aliiev, Iryna Vikyrchak, Volodymyr Yermolenko, Vakhtang Kebuladze, Yevheniia Kuznietsova, Marichka Paplauskaite, Tetiana Pylypchuk, Oleksandr Savchuk, Olena Herasymiuk, Halyna Kruk, Kateryna Ritz-Rakulu, Anhelina Kariakina, and others. Helsinki Book Fair (Helsingin Kirjamessut)

The Helsinki Book Fair is one of the largest book fairs in the Nordic region. Ukraine participated with a national stand and five events in the fair’s official programme. The special guests of the Ukrainian programme were writer Yevheniia Kuznietsova, whose novel The Ladder (Tikapuut) had just been published by Aula & Co in a translation by Eero Balka, and Yaryna Chornohuz, a soldier, poet, and recipient of the 2024 Shevchenko Prize.

Katowice Book Fair (Targi Książki w Katowicach)

Katowice, Poland
Ten publishers presented their books at the Ukrainian national stand. The main literary programme featured meetings with children's writer and translator Halyna Tkachuk and writer Yurii Vynnychuk, author of Maria's Keys and Legends of Lviv, both of which have been published in Polish translation.
