Translation Support Program 2021
The Translation Support Program Translate Ukraine of the Ukrainian Book Institute is the government program, launched to support translations of Ukrainian literary works into foreign languages. It is a unique project in Ukraine. It is aimed at the increase of visibility of Ukraine and Ukrainian literature in the international cultural space. Its goal is to make Ukrainian authors and their works recognizable abroad and to provide foreign readers with access to Ukrainian literature. The Program provides partial compensation for expenses on publishing of the Ukrainian literature abroad.

The applications to the Program were being accepted from 19 April to 10 May 2021.
In the frame of the 2021 Program, the Ukrainian Book Institute supported 71 translations of Ukrainian authors into 23 languages in 27 countries.

Numbers
The Translation Support Program Translate Ukraine is the project primarily aimed at the increase of visibility of Ukraine and Ukrainian literature in the international cultural space. It is a unique project in our country. Our goal is to give voice to Ukrainian authors in different languages and provide foreign readers with access to Ukrainian literature. We want to make writers and poets from Ukraine more recognizable on the world literary stage.
Positive dynamic during the second year of this Program has proven that foreign publishers are also interested in Ukrainian authors. In 2021, the UBI received 122 applications of publishing houses from all over the world, which is a 45% increase, compared to 2020.
After the technical selection and evaluation of the Expert Council, 90 applications were approved for funding, of which 10, however, did not make it to the agreement signing stage for reasons beyond the UBI’s control.
Based on the results of the previous stages of the Translation Support Program selection in 2021, 80 agreements were signed. Despite the fact that by the end of the year 17 agreements were terminated for various reasons, 63 titles were published under the sponsorship of the Program, which is an increase by 11 titles, compared to 2020.
In view of the growing interest of foreign publishers in translations of Ukrainian literary works, both the budget of the Program and the print runs of the translated books were increased in 2021. Nearly EUR 184 thousand was allocated for the promotion of Ukrainian literature abroad by means of joint financing of translations (In 2019, EUR 150 thousand was allocated). In such a way, over 66.5 copies were published, which is a 45% increase, compared to 2020!
Lucky books
Under the sponsorship of the UBI, books by Ukrainian authors were published in 24 countries, across four continents.
The highest number of translations was published in Europe, namely in Bulgaria (11), Germany (9) and Poland (8). Last year, Ukrainian literature was also introduced to the readers of Lebanon and Azerbaijan, where translations of the writings by Lesya Ukrainka were published; of Egypt, where “Time of Scattered Stones” by Volodymyr Samoylenko was published; and of Indonesia, where the translation of the children’s book “Unusual Professions” by Alla Gutnichenko was published.
In the frames of the Translation Support Program works by Ukrainian authors were translated into 21 languages, with the highest number of titles translated into Bulgarian (11), Polish (8) and German (8).
Last year, the most frequently translated works were those by Hryhory Skovoroda, Yuri Vynnychuk, Andriy Kokotyukha, Sophia Andrukhovych, as well as Romana Romanyshyn and Andriy Lesiv.
In particular, translations of Hryhory Skovoroda’s works were published in Bulgaria, Macedonia and Germany, and of Yuri Vynnychuk’s in Bulgaria, Poland, the Netherlands and Israel. Bulgaria published “Exile” four-book series by Andriy Kokotyukha. In Greece, Macedonia and Croatia, translations of “Amadoka” and “Felix Austria” by Sophia Andrukhovych were published.
In three countries, namely Lithuania, Italy and the USA, translations of the following children’s books by Romana Romanyshyn and Andriy Lesiv were published: “The War That Changed Rondo,” “I See That,” “Loudly, Softly, in a Whisper” and “On the Move.”
